I really find it hard to believe that the below clip is really supposed to create excitement. Columbia Pictures released this 5 minute scene/trailer I guess to show how great this apocalyptic blockbuster will be, which I believe it succeeded at re-categorizing “2012″ as a comedy. I was intrigued by 2012 a few months ago. After seeing this clip, I have changed my mind.
This film looks absolutely awful. Hilarious, but mostly just awful. I envision critics will have a field day with this movie when it comes out.
Now, if you want to see an apocalyptic/post apocalyptic flick this fall, “The Road,” seems like a good choice. This film features a family trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world. Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen star in this one, so at least you know the acting will be good, unlike the before mentioned film.
Immediately when I hear, “One of the scariest movies of all time,” I’m skeptical. I love horror movies, it’s one of my favorite genres. The issue is many horror flicks are simply entertaining and not very scary. I’m not talking about the cheap jump reaction when something pops up. I’m talking about the kind of scary where it messes with your head long after your done watching the movie and say to yourself, “what the hell did I just see.” Very few horror films live up to that, and many that are given the above quote of, “one of the scariest,” usually don’t live up to the hype.
Movies like “The Exorcist,”“Night of The Living Dead (1968),” “Exorcism of Emily Rose,” and “The Shining,” deserve that praise. Those movies scared the bejesus out of me, mostly because I was a child when I first saw them. But, they are still favorites of mine and can give me that chill on the back of my neck. I can’t think of any other horror movies that had that same sticking feeling of fear after I watched them. Maybe “The Ring“ when I first saw it at 15, though I can’t stand it now.
With all that said, I am really excited to see “Paranormal Activity.” For those of you who are not familiar with the film, “Paranormal Activity” is a “documentary” style fictional film showing the paranormal events a couple, Katie (Katie Featherston) & Micah (Micah Sloat), have “recorded” in their home. The ghost or demon eventually is provoked by the documenting of the activity in question and starts really messing with the couple. The film is the debut for it’s writer and director, Oren Peli.
Many are comparing “Paranormal Activity” with “The Blair Witch Project,” because of the micro budget and documentary style. I Don’t know if that’s fair because “The Blair Witch Project” sucked and I kind of have high hopes for “Paranormal Activity“. So, until I see it I won’t compare it to anything and give it its own identity. I just hope that in my review of it I don’t compare it to the likes of “The Blair Witch Project” or “Quarantine,” both of which I also had high hopes for. Also, the camera work better not be as nauseating (I liked “Cloverfield,” even though the camera work was hard to watch sometimes).
Hopefully I will get the chance to review this film, because it will be on limited release in some small cities. Paramount wants you to go to the film’s website and request it in your respective city. New York City is one of the top cities that are requesting the movie, so there is hope for me.
Those who have seen it have given it some good reviews. Usually critics get it right when they review horror movies positively. But like I always do, I will be the one to decide for myself if this movie is, “one of the scariest of all time.”
